The Majesty of Arenal

One place that I will make a point to visit is Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano. The Arenal volcano, or Volcán Arenal, has been the country’s most active volcano for the
past 43 years. It stands 5,437 feet tall and was formed roughly seven
thousand years ago by the now extinct Chato volcano. Over the course of its existence,
the Arenal Volcano’s major and minor eruptions have helped build the surrounding topography.
The
Volcano’s most recent major eruption occurred in 1968, when it buried
three small villages and caused 87 deaths. Because the volcano was
silent from about for over four centuries prior, it was assumed to be extinct; when
it erupted suddenly and without warning in 1968, it came as a complete surprise. From 1968 to 2010, the volcano possessed
constant, minor activity in the form of frequent visible smoke rising from
its throat and subtle lava flow. For the past eight years, however, it
has slipped back into its dormant state. Though no activity can be observed
at this time, it is still a very popular tourist attraction because of
the beauty of its landscape and a variety of adventurous offerings.

Before exploring the volcano itself it is worthwhile to visit La Fortuna, a small town located near the volcano. The town came to be following the catastrophic volcanic
eruption of 1968– many of the survivors from three nearby towns impacted by the eruption decided to come together to form a new community. This
town is often seen as the unofficial entrance point to the domain of Arenal. Lonely Planet's website offers a vivid description of La Fortuna:
"At eye level, you see hordes of tourists and tour-selling touts, post cards and pizza: evidence of a somnolent mountain town whose innocence has been shattered. But look up: whether the majestic volcano is cloud-shrouded or sunshine-soaked, it's always something to behold."
Its colorful structures, marketplaces, shops, and
parks make it an idyllic tourist destination. Speaking to employees can award you a better idea of the
history of the town area and locals are likely to recommend their favorite
activities. Stopping at this town on the way to the
volcano is an opportunity that should not be missed!

The
Arenal Volcano National Park consists of 29,692 acres and features an
extremely diverse population of wildlife and geological features. There is no shortage of natural attractions! The
most popular hikes include the volcano hike, which takes tourists around
the volcano to places with amazing views and opportunities to see
evidence of the 1968 eruption, and the waterfall hike, which takes
tourists to the La Fortuna Waterfall which is a great place to swim,
explore, and relax. There are also several different volcano-heated hot
springs that feel incredible after a long day of hiking.

The
natural wonder of the volcano and surrounding national park is a unique and important component of Costa Rica’s iconic natural landscape. I would like to be
able to experience the excitement of La Fortuna as well as the striking beauty of Arenal during my
time in Costa Rica!
